Kenwood: sunroom - altar cross.


Another little piece of the sunroom has survived - the altar cross evident in the French seamstress pics. It was sold at auction by Cynthia a few years back (which means she took it in late '68 as part of her "house clearing", and probably also means that it was originally purchased by her mother during one of many antique buying expeditions).
The current owner of the cross has very kindly sent in a photo. It was originally embellished with an ornate cover (as in the John photo) which has since gone the way of all things. Thus the core cross, seen above, looks a bit different; but apparently this is the very same object, sans cover. The owner tells me it will be coming up for sale next year...

    Didn't John Lennon say in the Maureen Cleave interview: 'Christianity will go,' he said. 'It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first-rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me.' It's ironic how he kept a large cross in the Sunroom? Is it from Aspreys? I know that Lennon liked to shop there..?

    I wouldn't take its presence to signify anything - have a look at some of the other junk he had on the sunroom shelves. As regards Christianity, I think John approved of its basic tenets, but despised what people do in its name.

    This does not look like that cross at Kenwood. It may be anotehr cross that was there. The Kenwood cross in teh sunroom is longer in each direction and if you measure them up (even without the cover) it doesn't seem possible.

    Agreed with Joe B - THIS cross would not fit inside the other one (if it was a case/shell, now missing). It's physically impossible given the dimensions of the "bursts" and the height of it.

    This is NOT the cross in the shown Lennon photo.
