There are two schools of thought, if I can put it like that, concerning the location of the Rubber Soul cover shoot. One possibility (and this is what both Robert Freeman and Paul McCartney remember) is that it took place in the grounds at Kenwood - possibly on the drive leading up to the house. The other possibility is that the photo was taken in the woods off Old Lane, near the disused Wisley airfield. The Beatles' then driver Alf Bicknell remembered this as the location. Like so many things, who knows? Not me, by any means.
Given that Freeman would have shot numerous pictures that day, I am surprised no more conclusive proof has emerged. However, the fact that GH was photographed in a field on the rear of the Rubber Soul cover, does lend some credibility that they may have gone on location from Kenwood that day (if indeed that was part of the same shoot). However, it's just a theory. Like many, I am sort of gobsmacked that so little of Freeman's material has actually surfaced from that session. I imagine, like other Beatles photographers of the era, he took many shots of them that day? Id so, where are they?
